Before J.J. Pearce Was J.J. Pearce
The J.J. Pearce neighborhood began as the J.J. Pearce Addition, a residential development built next to the recently completed J.J. Pearce High School. According to the J.J. Pearce Homeowners Association, the first homes were built in 1978, with development continuing into the early 1980s. JJ Pearce HOA
Both the neighborhood and the high school were named for Dr. Joseph Jones Pearce, who served as superintendent of Richardson ISD from 1946 to 1977. The neighborhood association credits Pearce with helping transform RISD from a small rural district into a much larger suburban school system during the decades when Richardson was rapidly expanding.
The connection became especially personal because Dr. Pearce himself later lived in the J.J. Pearce Addition until his death in 1995. So unlike many neighborhoods that simply borrow a nearby school’s name, J.J. Pearce developed around a school and a local education leader who was directly connected to the community.
The neighborhood association formed almost immediately. Its first meeting was held on September 7, 1978 at Mohawk Elementary School, the same year the first homes were being built.
Did You Know? J.J. Pearce is not just named after the nearby high school. The subdivision and school were both named for longtime RISD superintendent Dr. Joseph Jones Pearce, and Dr. Pearce later lived in the neighborhood himself.
