Before Highlands North Was Highlands North
Before Highlands North became a neighborhood, this part of Far North Dallas was farmland. According to the Highlands North Homeowners Association, the land that eventually became the neighborhood was once a cotton field, a reminder of how quickly Dallas’s northern edge changed during the suburban growth of the 1970s.
Even the neighborhood’s best-known landmark has agricultural roots. The Twin Lakes along Campbell Road were originally cow ponds. When Highlands North was developed, the developers donated the ponds to the City of Dallas for use as storm-water retention. Spillways and drainage infrastructure were later added, transforming the old farm ponds into the landscaped lakes that became a defining feature of the neighborhood.
Development moved quickly. Salado Park was established nearby in 1974, custom homes began filling Highlands North during the mid-to-late 1970s, and in 1976 a group of just 25 residents organized the Highlands North Homeowners Association. More than five decades later, the lakes, mature trees and original street layout still reflect that first era of development.
Did you know? Highlands North’s Twin Lakes were originally cow ponds. The neighborhood developers donated them to the City of Dallas for storm-water retention, and they eventually became one of Highlands North’s most recognizable landmarks.
