Before Campbell Green Was Campbell Green
Before Campbell Green became a North Dallas neighborhood, the larger area around Campbell Road was part of a much more rural North Texas landscape. Campbell Road itself is named for Robert Fleming Campbell, a Tennessee native who settled in present-day Richardson in 1851. More than a century later, this part of Far North Dallas entered a very different phase of growth. Residential development accelerated during the 1970s, and Campbell Green Park was established in 1974 as a 17.5-acre community park. The City of Dallas says the park was named in honor of the historic Campbell family and reflects the growth of the surrounding neighborhood.
Homes followed quickly. Public records show Campbell Green-area properties dating to the mid-1970s, including homes built in 1974, 1976 and 1977. Brentfield Elementary opened nearby in August 1975 with only twelve classrooms and about 200 students, another marker of how rapidly this once-rural edge of Dallas was becoming an established residential community.
