Before Richardson Heights Estates
Before Richardson Heights Estates was developed, the land surrounding west Richardson was still largely agricultural. Cotton became one of the area’s principal crops after the Civil War, and Richardson remained a small farming and railroad community well into the 20th century.
That changed quickly after World War II. New employers, highway access and population growth pushed residential development westward. Richardson Heights was among the subdivisions that helped redefine the city, replacing former cotton fields with new streets, schools and homes.
Richardson Heights Estates was part of that first wave. Public property records show homes along West Shore Drive being built as early as 1957, with many more completed from 1958 through 1961. The larger lots and custom-feeling ranch homes found here today still reflect that early period of suburban development.
By the time Richardson’s later west-side neighborhoods were being built in the mid- and late 1960s, Richardson Heights Estates was already an established residential community.
Did You Know? Some Richardson Heights Estates homes date to 1957 and 1958, making the neighborhood older than many of the surrounding west Richardson subdivisions developed during the 1960s and 1970s.
