Before Spring Creek Was Spring Creek
Before the homes and tree-lined streets of Spring Creek arrived, this portion of Far North Dallas was still largely open country. Historical recollections from the area describe ranchland, cotton fields and two-lane country roads stretching across this part of North Dallas in the late 1950s, shortly before suburban development accelerated.
One of the more interesting local connections involves Dallas businessman and former U.S. Senator William A. “Bill” Blakley, who owned substantial acreage in this part of North Dallas. Local historical accounts collected by Friends of Preston Ridge Trail recall Blakley riding horses on ranchland around what later became Meandering Way. The McCallum family also reportedly ran cattle on land in the surrounding area.
That rural landscape changed quickly during the 1960s as Dallas expanded northward. Spring Creek developed during this period, and Spring Creek Elementary opened on Roundrock Road in 1967, marking just how quickly this once-rural corner of Dallas was becoming an established residential community.
