Before Hillcrest Manor Was Hillcrest Manor
Before Hillcrest Manor was built, this part of North Dallas sat along the same broader agricultural landscape that once defined much of the area around Campbell Road. The road itself takes its name from Robert Fleming Campbell, an early North Texas settler and farmer who came to the Richardson area in 1851. Historical records describe Campbell raising wheat, corn and oats along with livestock, and photographs preserved by the Richardson Public Library show the original Campbell farm site farther east near Campbell Road and Prairie Creek Drive.
More than a century later, the landscape around Campbell Road was changing again. Hillcrest Manor began filling with homes during the 1970s, with public records showing many properties in the first section dating from roughly 1975 through 1979. Streets such as Canongate, Crooked Oak, Holyoke and Thomas Chapel reflect that period of Far North Dallas growth.
By 1975, Richardson ISD had also opened Brentfield Elementary nearby, initially serving about 200 students in a 12-classroom building. Together, the new school and surrounding subdivisions marked how quickly this once-rural edge of Dallas was becoming an established residential community.
Did You Know? Campbell Road is named for Robert Fleming Campbell, an early North Texas farmer who settled in the area in 1851 and raised crops and livestock long before Far North Dallas was developed.
