Before Prestonwood East Was Prestonwood East
Prestonwood East sits in an area that was still being transformed into suburban North Dallas during the late 1960s and early 1970s. One particularly useful marker of that change is nearby James Bowie Elementary. Richardson ISD opened Bowie in the fall of 1968, beginning with just twelve classrooms, several years before many of the homes now associated with Prestonwood East were completed.
Residential development followed quickly. Public property records show homes within Prestonwood East and the adjoining Prestonwood subdivision being completed in the early 1970s, including houses from 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1973. Properties on Authon Drive, for example, are recorded within Prestonwood Addition No. 5 and date to 1973.
The timing tells an interesting story: Bowie Elementary was already standing as North Dallas expanded around it, and within only a few years streets such as Authon, Bluefield, Heathermore, Alto Caro and La Manga were filling with new homes. What had been the suburban edge of Dallas was becoming an established neighborhood.
Did you know? James Bowie Elementary opened in 1968 with only twelve classrooms, before many Prestonwood East homes were even built. Today the school still sits immediately beside the neighborhood on La Manga Drive.
