Before Prestonwood North Was Prestonwood North

Prestonwood North took shape during a period when Far North Dallas was still very much a developing edge of the city. The larger Prestonwood subdivision began breaking ground in the late 1970s, and longtime residents have preserved unusually vivid memories of what the neighborhood looked like when the first homes were new. 

One original Prestonwood homeowner who moved to Shadybank Drive in 1981 recalled that roughly half the homes on the street were not yet completed. The neighborhood had almost no mature landscaping at the time. Builders commonly planted just a couple of young live oaks with each house, trees that decades later have grown into the mature canopy that now characterizes much of Prestonwood. 

The surrounding area was developing at the same pace. Prestonwood Baptist Church began in North Dallas in 1977 and moved to a permanent location at Arapaho and Hillcrest in 1979, further illustrating how rapidly this part of Dallas was growing during the same period Prestonwood North was being built. 

What began as a new subdivision with unfinished streets, sparse landscaping and recently planted trees gradually became one of Far North Dallas’s established residential areas.

Did You Know? An original Prestonwood homeowner who moved in during 1981 remembered that about half the homes on the street were still unfinished and that there were virtually no mature trees. Many of the large trees seen in the neighborhood today began as the small live oaks builders planted with the first homes.

Prestonwood North is part of the broader Prestonwood community in Far North Dallas. Its housing stock reflects the late-1970s and early-1980s development period, with established brick homes, mature landscaping and streets that have changed dramatically since the neighborhood’s first years.

The Prestonwood North Homeowners Association remains active today, supporting neighborhood landscaping, resident events, communication and community programs. The association specifically maintains landscaping along Hillcrest Road and the neighborhood entrance at Brentfield Drive.
