Before Prestonwood Estates Was Prestonwood Estates

Long before Prestonwood Estates became a neighborhood of winding streets and mature trees, Far North Dallas looked much different. Longtime Prestonwood residents have recalled that when development pushed into this part of Dallas, much of the surrounding landscape was still open prairie, a sharp contrast to the densely developed North Dallas of today.

The neighborhood’s story is also tied geographically to one of North Texas’s oldest transportation corridors. Nearby Preston Road follows the general route of Old Preston Road, a historic path that began as an Indigenous trail and later became a Republic of Texas military road, immigrant route and cattle trail. The Texas State Historical Association dates the road’s development to the early 1840s and notes that it became one of the principal routes into North Texas before the railroad era.

More than a century later, this rural edge of Dallas was transformed again. Prestonwood Estates began taking shape by the late 1960s, with homes appearing by 1968 and additional sections developing through the early 1970s. City records still identify multiple recorded sections of Prestonwood Estates, including a Sixth Section whose plat appears in Dallas County map records.
